Vladimir Putin Renews Nuclear Threats Against West

Russian president says his ‘strategic forces’ are ready to retaliate

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued renewed nuclear threats against the west, warning of potential retaliation in response to perceived risks posed by Nato expansion and western containment efforts.

Speaking during a military parade on Red Square commemorating the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II, Putin emphasized Russia’s readiness to stand firm against attempts to contain it.

“We reject any state or alliance’s exceptionalist pretences,” Putin stated, alluding to Nato’s expansion, particularly its inclusion of Sweden and Finland following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Russia will do everything not to allow a global conflict, but at the same time, we will not let anyone threaten us.

Our strategic forces are always at combat readiness,” he added, underscoring Russia’s possession of the world’s largest arsenal of nuclear weapons.

The parade featured a display of military hardware, including RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile launchers, highlighting Russia’s capability to strike targets globally.

Putin’s warning comes amid what he perceives as an inflection point in Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with the Russian army making gradual advances against Ukrainian troops.

While addressing commanders fighting in Ukraine, Putin stressed the importance of their success for Russia’s economic and social development.

Russia’s thinly veiled threats about its nuclear arsenal serve as a deterrent against increased western support for Ukraine, with Putin ordering drills to rehearse the use of tactical nuclear weapons in response to provocative statements from western leaders.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov emphasized that these drills are a warning to the west not to escalate tensions further.

He hinted at the possibility of Moscow altering its nuclear doctrine, reflecting the changing security landscape.

Despite assertions from Russian officials downplaying the significance of the drills, Putin’s remarks underscore Russia’s willingness to employ all means necessary to defend its interests against perceived western aggression.
